Creative Tags   Written by Design Team Member - Kylie Hopkins

Tags are an individual and creative way to embellish a scrapbook page. There are many commercially mass-produced tags available in the market but I can show you how easy it is to create beautiful tags at home with your own individual style and flair.

There are many different ways you can decorate tags and every scrapper will have preferred techniques they may like to use. Here are some of my favourite techniques showcased on tags I have created.

Paper Tearing

You can create lovely layered and textured looks with tearing. It adds dimension while keeping the tag relatively flat. Try tearing on different angles using various types of paper and cardstock. You can even chalk or ink the edges to give them greater depth.

Layering different objects

On this tag I have layered cardstock, a metal-rimmed tag, a wooden flower and a button. Try using a small photo inside a metal-rimmed tag or add some journaling to make the tag functional as well as visually appealing.

Pockets and removable mini tags

Create a tag within a tag by making a pocket and slipping a smaller tag inside for journaling or a photo.

Rub-on Lettering

A simple and effective way to add text to your tags, you can individualise your tags with phrases that reflect the theme of your page. A tag could be the basis of your page title.

Commercially made elements

You can easily include commercially made elements such as plastic words and wooden shapes, metal objects and stickers.

Hand-cut Lettering

Include a hand-cut monogram or word that refects the theme of your page or combine hand-cut letters with rub-ons or computer printing.

Hand or machine stitching

Include some stitching to hold elements together or simply as decoration.

Combining different styles of tags

Using different styles of tags combined on one tag can be really effective especially if they are different shapes and sizes. Use shipping tags, jewellery tags, scalloped tags, metal-rimmed tags, dog-tags, clear plastic tags etc.

Of course there are endless possibilities for decorating tags. Try dry embossing, heat embossing, stamping, using photos on your tags, double-sided tags, ribbons, fibres, buttons, brads, eyelets, metal plaques, metal frames, paper clips, ink, paint, sanding, paper scrunching, staples, chalking, bundles of tags tied together, tiny tags with the letters of your title printed/stamped/stuck onto them, round tags, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on and on for as far as your imagination will take you. Why don’t you have a go at making some tags today. It is a great way to use up all those small scraps of cardstock and printed paper.
